What it means
The low oil level light (or message) means the oil quantity in the sump may be below the minimum mark. Many European cars (including some VW/Audi models) use a yellow oil-can icon for level. That is a maintenance / top-up alert — still important, but different urgency from a red oil-pressure can that appears while driving.
Low oil level vs oil pressure (do not confuse them)
Red oil-can while driving = oil pressure may be too low → stop safely and shut the engine off. Amber/yellow oil level or oil-can with level lines = quantity may be low → check and top up soon. Low level can eventually cause low pressure, so do not ignore a level warning for weeks. If both appear, treat it as an oil-pressure emergency first.
What to do first
- Park on level ground and wait as your manual recommends before checking the dipstick or electronic oil-level menu.
- If level is below MIN, add the correct oil grade in small amounts and recheck — do not overfill.
- Look under the car for fresh oil spots; note oil consumption between services.
- If the red oil-pressure light is also on, stop driving and arrange a tow.
- Book service if you must add oil often or the level warning returns quickly.
Common causes
- Oil overdue for a change / gradual consumption
- Small leak (valve cover, oil filter, pan gasket)
- Turbo or piston-ring oil use on higher-mileage engines
- Incorrect last fill (underfilled after service)
- Faulty oil level sensor (less common — verify with dipstick when available)
When it is most serious
Stop if the red oil-pressure warning appears, you hear knocking, or oil is pouring under the car. A level warning alone with a normal-running engine usually allows a careful short drive to buy oil or reach a shop after you confirm the dipstick.
Low Oil Level FAQ
Is the yellow oil light the same as the red oil pressure light?
No. Yellow/amber oil level warnings mean check and top up oil quantity. A red oil-can pressure light while driving means stop — lubrication pressure may be too low. See our oil pressure guide if the icon is red and stays on while the engine runs.
Can I drive with the low oil level light on?
Only after you check the level. If it is just slightly low, top up and drive gently to a shop. If the dipstick is dry or the red pressure light is on, do not keep driving.
Why does my VW or Audi show a yellow oil can?
Many VW/Audi cars use a yellow oil-can symbol for minimum oil level, not red oil pressure. Check oil level with the car on level ground as the manual describes (some use an electronic measurement instead of a dipstick).
How much oil should I add?
Add small amounts of the grade on the oil cap or manual, then recheck. The distance from MIN to MAX is often less than a full quart/liter — overfilling can cause its own problems.
