What it means

Most modern cars use electric power steering (EPS). When the cluster shows a steering-wheel icon with !, assist may be limited or disabled. You can often still drive, but parking-lot turns and low-speed maneuvers need more muscle. This is not the same as the red brake warning (circle with !) — that icon is about the brake system, not steering.

Electric (EPS) vs hydraulic power steering

EPS cars have no traditional power-steering fluid reservoir for assist — the fault is electrical or motor/module related. Older hydraulic systems use a belt-driven pump and fluid; a slipping belt, low fluid, or pump failure can light a steering warning and make the wheel heavy. Check your owner's manual for which system you have before buying fluid.

What to do first

  1. Note whether the battery or charging light is also on — low voltage often disables EPS.
  2. At low speed, confirm you can still steer; if the wheel locks or feels stuck, stop safely.
  3. For hydraulic systems, check power-steering fluid level when cool if the reservoir is accessible.
  4. Inspect the serpentine belt for cracks or glazing on hydraulic cars.
  5. Scan for EPS / steering-angle codes; a basic engine-only OBD reader may miss them.

Common causes

When it is most serious

Get help the same day if steering suddenly becomes extremely heavy at speed, the battery light is also on, or multiple stability warnings appear. Do not ignore a steady EPS light for weeks — assist can drop without much warning when voltage sags.

Power Steering Warning FAQ

What does a steering wheel with an exclamation mark mean?

It is usually the power steering warning. Assist may be reduced. Drive carefully to a shop, especially if the wheel feels heavy. It is not the red brake circle-with-! light.

Why is my steering heavy when the power steering light is on?

Without assist, you are turning the rack mostly by hand. At parking speeds that feels dramatic; at highway speed it may feel closer to normal but still needs repair. Check charging voltage on EPS cars before replacing the steering rack.

Can a weak battery cause the power steering light?

Yes. EPS is sensitive to low voltage during cranking or while idling with many accessories on. If the battery light or multiple warnings came on together, test the battery and alternator first.

Is it safe to drive with the power steering light on?

Usually yes for a short trip if you can still steer and no red brake/oil/temperature lights are on. Avoid high-speed emergency maneuvers and get the system scanned soon.
