What it means
Automatic and dual-clutch gearboxes use sensors for fluid temperature, pressure, and gear position. When a fault is stored, the cluster may show a gear symbol, a temperature-in-gear icon, or a message such as Transmission malfunction. Manual cars rarely have this light; clutch or gearbox issues more often show as feel/noise rather than a dedicated lamp.
What to do first
- Note whether the check engine light is also on — many transmission faults store powertrain codes.
- If the car is in limp mode (stuck in one gear, harsh shifts), avoid highway speeds and tow if needed.

Transmission light vs engine oil light
A plain red oil-can icon is almost always engine oil pressure, not the gearbox. Transmission warnings usually include a gear shape, AT label, or temperature-in-gear artwork. Do not top up engine oil hoping to clear a transmission light.
When it is most serious
Stop and arrange a tow if the car will not engage Drive/Reverse, gears slam violently, fluid is pouring out, or the transmission overheat warning will not clear after a cool-down. Continuing can destroy the gearbox.
